We talked about travelling by air in our last blog when you suffer from food allergies, but what about other means of transport?
What do you have to think about when you’re travelling by road or train?
- Whether you are travelling in the UK or abroad, always ask for recommendations for restaurants and hotels from friends who are also have food allergies, or do very focussed research. If you need to phone the hotel, or restaurants in the area. Look at their websites at any example menus.
- Travelling by road is the best way for you to keep total control over what you eat and where you eat. But, always, look for restaurants, pubs, eateries on your route, so you can check out their menus, and even possibly give them a ring and ask them about their provision for people with food allergies.
- Always carry free-from snacks, like our range of snack bars, Magibles or Savoury Snacks.
- Make sure your mobile phone works, particularly if you are going abroad with food allergies.
- Whichever way, and wherever you are travelling to – make sure you have your medication with you, and easy to access.
- Don’t forget to take a good supply of handwipes to wipe your hands, table tops, other surfaces you come into contact with to avoid any cross contamination.
- Locate hospitals nearest to where you are staying – in case of any allergic reactions, so when you out and about you know where you will be taken.
Travelling Abroad
Always carry a translation card or ‘chef card’ that outlines the foods you need to avoid. These cards help communicate your dietary requirements to chefs or managers at restaurants. Allergy UK provides translation cards, which you can find here.
Whether traveling by train or car, the safest option is generally to bring your own food.
By following these tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable journey, regardless of your mode of transportation. Safe travels!
