There is a particular kind of Sunday feeling that allergy families know well. It happens the night before the first day of school.
The uniform is pressed. The lunchbox is packed- no, the lunchbox is carefully assembled, with the same deliberate attention that goes into every single meal. The emergency plan has been emailed to the school office. The adrenaline pen is in the right bag, labelled, with a second one as backup. The new teacher has been briefed, or at least you hope they have, because you are already mentally drafting the follow-up email for Tuesday morning just in case.
It is not the same Sunday feeling as everyone else’s.
Most parents worry about whether their child will find their classroom. Allergy parents carry an extra layer on top of all of that: the quiet, never-quite-gone awareness that the people now responsible for your child’s safety are people you have never met. New year. New faces. Same non-negotiables.
But here is a question worth sitting with this August.
What if school felt completely different? Not different in the way that requires a laminated emergency sheet on every wall and a careful conversation with every dinner lady on the rota. Different in the way that means your child walks in and is just a child. No asterisks. No negotiations. No moment at the lunch queue where they look across at what everyone else is eating and feel the gap between themselves and the table.
That is Braveland.
Welcome Back, Explorers
Braveland is the world at the heart of the Allergy Explorer game, a place built entirely for children with food allergies. In Braveland, every snack table is safe. Every meal is shared without negotiation. Every teacher knows the plan not because someone insisted they read it, but because that is simply how things work here. There are no “may contain” warnings in Braveland. There is no child eating a packed lunch two seats away from everyone else because the catered option could not be guaranteed.
This September, the Allergy Explorers, Maya, Leo, and Zara, are heading back to school. Lunchboxes packed. Bags on shoulders. Ready.
And they are not the only ones.
What Hogwarts and Braveland Have in Common
This August marks 25 years since a certain fictional school opened its doors to a boy who did not yet know who he was. In the years since, Hogwarts has come to mean something beyond a setting in a children’s story. It has become a symbol for what school can look like at its very best: a place where being different is not a liability. Where arriving as yourself, fully and without apology, is the whole point.
The Sorting Hat did not ask students to change. It asked who they already were, and found them a community.
Braveland works the same way.
Every child who walks into Braveland walks into a school that was already built for them. Not adapted for them. Not adjusted to accommodate them. Built for them, from the ground up. That distinction matters more than it might seem. There is a real difference between a school that makes room and a school that starts from inclusion. Braveland is the second kind.
And this month, in the spirit of the season, it is time to sort the Allergy Explorers into their houses.
The Sorting Snack
Gryffindor: Brave, Bold, Ready for Anything
Maya’s lunchbox does not overthink it. Inside: a Mango Cold-Pressed Bar and two thick slices of Carrot Cake, baked on Sunday night with Creative Nature’s Carrot Cake Mix, still faintly fragrant at the edges of the tin. Gryffindors do not need the snack to announce itself. They just need it to show up and deliver. No fuss. No compromise. The Mango Bar is exactly that: vivid, dependable, and completely allergen-free without once making a point of it.
Hufflepuff: Loyal, Warm, the One Who Always Has Enough
Leo packs the Chia and Cocoa Brownie, made from scratch the evening before and cut into more squares than a lunchbox strictly needs, because that is a very Hufflepuff thing to do. Hufflepuffs bake for the whole table. In Braveland, Leo’s brownies reach every lunchbox without a single hesitation, because every lunchbox in Braveland is safe. That is the whole point of the place.
Ravenclaw: Thoughtful, Curious, the One Who Already Read the Label
Zara has a Bursting Berry Blend Fruit Oatie Bar, a small container of something nutritious that nobody asked about but everyone ends up wanting, and two slices of Chocolate Cake from a tin at the bottom of the bag. Ravenclaws are the ones who read the label before anyone else thinks to. In Braveland, reading the label is simply confirmation of what they already knew. Safe. As always.
Slytherin: Resourceful, Unexpected, Quietly Impressive
The fourth lunchbox does not announce itself. It never does. Inside: the HazelNOT Magibles, named for everything they are not and built on everything they are. Creamy, indulgent, and somehow here despite every “may contain” that ever tried to stand in the way. Slytherins understand that the best products do not shout. They simply outlast the competition.

- Adrenaline auto-injector: two prescribed pens, one at school and one at home, both in date
- Written emergency action plan: shared with the class teacher, the school office, and any cover staff before day one
- Individual healthcare plan: your child’s legal right under Benedict’s Law from September 2026
- Safe snack list: sent in writing to the teacher and any staff supervising lunch or after-school clubs
