Keeping Children Safe at Halloween: A Spooktacular Guide

Halloween is a thrilling and magical time for kids, filled with costumes, spooky decorations, and, of course, delicious treats. However, for parents of children with allergies, it can also be a season of heightened concern. Ensuring that your child with allergies has a safe and enjoyable Halloween experience requires some extra precautions. We would like to share with you our tips and tricks to ensuring everyone is kept safe this Halloween.

Our Top Tips:

Trick-or-Treat Bag Inspection: Before your child indulges in their candy haul, inspect it together. Remove any items that may pose a risk and replace them with safe alternatives. Use this opportunity to teach your child how to recognize allergens on labels.

Notify Neighbours: If you have supportive neighbours, inform them about your child’s allergies. They might be willing to provide safe treats or keep allergen-filled candy out of reach.

Emergency Preparedness: Always have your child carry any necessary allergy medications, such as an epinephrine auto-injector, it is important that they carry two at all times. Make sure they know how and when to use it and that you, as a parent, are also aware of emergency procedures.

The Teal Pumpkin Project: Embrace the Teal Pumpkin Project! Place a teal-colored pumpkin outside your home to signal that you offer non-food treats for children with allergies. This simple act promotes inclusivity and awareness in your community.

Avoid loose sweets and chocolate: Make sure to avoid all treats that are not pre packaged and coming in packaging. This will have increased the possibility of cross contamination. Only take items that are sealed and in packaging.

Halloween should be a time of excitement and joy for all children, including those with allergies. By taking these precautions and being proactive, you can create a safe Halloween experience that allows your child to enjoy the festivities while avoiding allergens. With education, communication, and a little creativity, Halloween can remain a spooktacular and allergy-safe holiday for your family.
